In the IVovel system there are two types of non player characters.
Un-named Characters (UNC)
These characters are the generic populaton of the world. Anything from the townsfolk to the guards at the gate to the horses you ride are all considered un-named characters. Though they are called unnamed they could easily have names and be introduced to the Protagonists. The key behind UNC is that they have Character Traits like everyone else but the author does not roll dice when the UNC takes action.
In adition to Strength and Aptitude, UNCs have a number associated with each Character traits that represents the average number of successes that trait would provide. The chart below provides the number that is usused to produce the average number of successes.
|d 4||d 6||d 8||d 10||d 12|
The number of success that a UNC action has, is calculated by adding the above numbers together for the two Character Traits associated with the check, as well as any specializations the UNC has. The general rule of thumb is to always round down for the resulting number of successes.
Named Antagonistic Characters (NAC)
These characters are the driving force behind the conflict the Protagonists face. They are seperated from UNC by the fact that they are usually in a position of greater influence and power. The rule of thumb is that any action a NAC takes can be rolled as normal, or the above table can be used. If the above table is used add .5 to the calculation of average successes. Also the author can round up at his discretion. If the Author decides to roll for the NAC they usualy add 1d6 to the dice pool.
